Almost all major US-Based Public Cloud Companies Like Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle have introduced something they call a soverign cloud. But is that even possible, since any and all US Based Public Cloud companies must abide by the CLOUD Act?
Examples of Sovereign Public Cloud Practices:
Here are some examples of Public Cloud providers pertaining to have a Public Cloud offering that is targeted towards Europe’s Sovereign Cloud need.
So what does Sovereign mean?
Is this really Sovereign?
In short, no!
All these companies are US Based. Which means that they need to abide by US Law. And the US Law has things such as the Patriot and CLOUD Act. Which simply compells US Based RCS and ECS companies and all of their subsidiaries to hand over data if the need rises according to the US Federal Goverment.
By no means any US Based company can offer full sovereignity. In the end they all need to abide by US Law which makes them susceptable for things like the CLOUD Act. Although every Cloud provider can object to handing over data, in the end the risk is there that they will be forced to.
